THE 1989 SEASON:

Joe Montana's mastery of the west coast offense is firmly on display as the 49'ers (14-2) steam roll through the playoffs, capped off with a resounding 55-10 win over Denver (11-5) in Super Bowl XXIV. The team of the 80's, the Niners win their fourth Lombardi trophy in a decade of dominance. The great John Elway leads the Broncos back to the big dance for the third time in four years, but all three trips are disastrous. The NFC is the superior conference, but anything can happen on any given Sunday. Future Hall-of-Famers Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas and Deion Sanders are in their rookie seasons.

The other playoff teams:

AFC 

Cleveland (9-7) With hometown hero Bernie Kosar at the helm, the Browns are back in the AFC Championship for the third time in four years. 

Buffalo (9-7) Kelly, Thomas, Reed, Smith...the Bills are circling the wagons.

Houston (9-7) Warren Moon and his cast of speedy receivers give defenses fits.

Pittsburgh (9-7) A young, opportunistic defense featuring Rod Woodson, leads the Steelers to an upset Wild Card victory over rival Houston.

NFC

New York Giants (12-4) L.T. and the gang bruise their way to the top of a stacked NFC East.

Minnesota (10-6) Purple People Eaters 2.0. Defensive Player of the Year Keith Millard (18 sacks) and DE Chris Doleman (21 sacks) devour opposing QB's on their way to the NFC Central crown. 

Philadelphia (11-5) The original dual-threat QB, Randcall Cunningham has the Eagles soaring into the playoffs.

 Los Angeles Rams (11-5) QB Jim Everett leads the cinderella Rams to two impressive road playoff upsets over Philadelphia and New York. 

Honorable Mention:

Green Bay (10-6) Before Favre, there was the"Majik" man. Don Majkowski tops the league with 4318 passing yards and leads the Pack to their first winning season in 11 years.
