1984 BRIGHAM YOUNG COUGARS: The Cougars finished the regular season as the only undefeated team in Division I-A, and secured their first ever national title by defeating Michigan in the 1984 Holiday Bowl. They were ranked number one in both major final polls, the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll. Notable players: Robbie Bosco, Trevor Matich, Vai Sikahema, Kurt Gouveia, Kyle Morrell, Jim Herrmann.    

 

1993 FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES: The Noles win their first national title behind the arm and legs of their dynamic, Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Charlie Ward. Notable players: Charlie Ward, Warrick Dunn, William Floyd, Tamarick Vanover, Derrick Brooks, Derrick Alexander. 

 

1980 GEORGIA BULLDOGS: The Bulldogs notch a perfect 12-0 season record and are crowned national champions after their 17-10 victory over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Notable players: Herschel Walker, Bucky Belue, Lindsay Scott, Amp Arnold, Clarence Kay, Scott Woerner, Jimmy Payne. 

 

1997 MICHIGAN WOLVERINES: Michigan compiles an unblemished 12–0 record, wins the Big Ten Conference championship and goes on to defeat Washington State in the Rose Bowl. The Wolverines are declared national champions by the Associated Press and numerous other polls. Defensive back Charles Woodson wins the Heisman Trophy. Notable players: Charles Woodson, Brian Griese, Jeff Bakus, Steve Hutchinson, Jon Jansen, Jerame Tuman, James Hall, Dhani Jones, Josh Williams, Glen Steele.

 

2002 OHIO STATE BUCKEYES: Ohio State is the first team in Division 1-A history to finish its season at 14–0. The Buckeyes win the national championship for the first time since 1968. Notable players: Maurice Clarett, Craig Krenzel, Mike Doss, Chris Gamble, Michael Jenkins, Will Smith, Will Allen.

 

1976 PITT PANTHERS: Consesus national champions, the 12-0 Pitt Panthers demolish second-ranked Georgia 27-3 in the Sugar Bowl. Tony Dorsett leads the nation with 1948 rushing yards and wins the Heisman Trophy. Notable players: Tony Dorsett, Matt Cavanaugh, Willie Taylor, Jim Corbett, Gordon Jones, Randy Reutershan, Bob Jury, Randy Holloway.

 

2005 TEXAS LONGHORNS: After drubbing Colorado 70-3 in the Big 12 championship, the Longhorns finish the season as national champions by defeating USC 41-38 in the Rose Bowl. Numerous publications have cited this victory as one of the greatest performances in college football history.  Notable players: Vince Young, Jamaal Charles, Michael Huff, Jonathan Scott, Rodrique Wright, Justin Blalock, Aaron Harris.

 
 

2004 USC TROJANS: The Trojans dismantle Oklahoma 55-19 in the Orange Bowl and win their first undisputed national championship since 1972. Quarterback Matt Leinart wins the Heisman Trophy. Notable players: Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Shaun Cody, Matt Grootegoed, Mike Patterson, Lofa Tatupu, Dwayne Jarrett, Sam Baker, Lawrence Jackson.
