The Calgary Flames win their first Stanley Cup defeating Montreal 4-2 in an all-Canadian finals series. As of this writing, it is the last time two teams from Canada face each other in the Cup finals. The most surprising team of the season is the Chicago Blackhawks. Despite barely making the playoffs with a regular season record of 27-41-12, the Hawks advance all the way to the Campbell Conference finals with impressive wins over Detroit and St. Louis. Wayne Gretzky (54 G, 113 A, 168 P), in his first season with the L.A. Kings, wins the Hart Memorial Trophy over Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux (85 G, 114 A, 199 P). Lemieux leads the league with 85 goals and 114 assists (tied with Gretzky). Patrick Roy (33-5-6, 2.47 GAA) brings home Vezina Trophy honors with his unrivaled play in the net for the Canadians. Defenseman Al MacInnis of the Flames wins the Conn Smythe with 24 assists in 22 playoff games. Scoring is high in the wild 80's and this season is no exception. Games are averaging nearly 8 goals. It is also the era of the enforcer as 30 players rack up 200 or more penalty minutes.
