The Islanders Mike Bossy becomes the second player in history to score 50 goals in his first 50 games (Maurice Richard). Bossy finishes the season as the top scorer with 68 total goals. Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky breaks Bobby Orr's assist record with 109, and Phil Esposito's points record with 164. The Great One wins the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP for the second time. Richard Sevigny of Montreal leads all net minders with a 2.40 GAA, and brings home Vezina honors for he and his goal mates Michel Laroque and Denis Herron. Vancouver's Tiger Williams leads the league with 343 penalty minutes. Nine teams finish the regular season with 85+ points making for a competitive playoff field: Islanders (110), St. Louis (107), Montreal (103), Buffalo (99), Los Angeles (99), Philadelphia (97), Calgary (92), Boston (87), Minnesota (87).
