After missing the playoffs the previous season, Montreal eliminates the heavily-favored Boston Bruins in seven games in the Eastern Division Quarter-Finals. With the powerhouse Bruins in the rear-view mirror, the Canadiens roll on to defeat Minnesota 4-2, and Chicago 4-3 respectively to hoist their 17th Stanley Cup. Montreal's new star goalie Ken Dryden wins the Conn Smythe for his tremendous play in the net throughout the playoffs. The Bruin's Bobby Orr has another amazing season in which he sets records for plus/minus (+124) and assists (102). For his efforts, Orr is awarded a second consecutive Hart Memorial trophy as season MVP and the Norris trophy as top Defenseman. Orr's teammate Phil Esposito breaks his own previous record for points with 152 and also sets a new single-season mark for goals with 76. Ed Giacomin (2.16 GAA) and Gilles Villemure (2.30 GAA) of the New York Rangers win the Vezina as the league's best goalie tandem. Buffalo's Gilbert Perrault (38 G, 34 A) wins the Calder Memorial as the league's top rookie. Boston once again leads the league in season points with 121 regular season points. New York (109), Chicago (107), Montreal (97), St. Louis (87), Toronto (82), Philadelphia (73), and Minnesota (72) are the other playoff teams.
