THE 1959 SEASON:

The Los Angeles Dodgers (86-68), in their second season since moving from Brooklyn, win the NL pennant after a two game playoff against Milwaukee (86-68). L.A. goes on to win the World Series in six games against the Chicago White Sox (94-60). It is the Sox first "Fall Classic" since 1919 and interrupts a Yankees' (78-76) dynasty that dominates the AL between 1949 and 1964. Cleveland (89-65) and San Francisco (83-71) keep the pennant races tight in both leagues.

There is plenty of power throughout both leagues. Milwaukee's Eddie Mathews out-homers repeat MVP Ernie Banks of the Cubs 46 to 45. In the AL, Cleveland's Rocky Colavito and Washington's Harmon Killebrew tie with 42 dingers. Bank's 143 RBI's leads the NL, while Cincy's Frank Robinson tops the AL with 125. Hank Aaron's .355 BA is best in the NL for the Braves, while Detroit's Harvey Keun leads the AL with .353. Early Wynn (22-10, 3.17 ERA, 179 SO) of the White Sox wins the Cy Young and is named MLB Player of the Year. The '59 season is the only one between 1950 and 1981 where no pitcher pitches a no-hitter.
