1983 BALTIMORE ORIOLES: The Orioles (98-64) go 7-2 in the playoffs and defeat the Phillies 4-1 in the World Series to win their first title since 1970. Eddie Murray (.306 BA, 33 HR, 111 RB1) has one of the best seasons of his Hall of Fame career, and 22 year-old Cal Ripken (.304 BA, 27 HR, 102 RBI) takes home AL MVP honors in just his second season. 

 

 

 

 

 

1968 DETROIT TIGERS: The '68 Tigers (103-59) feature baseball's last 30-game winner, as Denny McLain goes 31-6 with 1.96 ERA to win the AL Cy Young and MVP awards. However, it is Mickey Lolich who carrys the team in the World Series going 3-0 and allowing just five runs in three complete games. The offense is robust as well, with Norm Cash, Bill Freehan, Jim Northrup and Willie Horton all having strong seasons. 

 

 

 

 

 

1954 NEW YORK GIANTS: Clear underdogs heading into the 1954 World Series versus Cleveland, the Giants seize momentum in Game 1 with Willie May's famous over the shoulder catch and Dusty Rhode's pinch-hit walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th. New York's momentus game one turns into into a 4-0 sweep of the Indians. Mays (.345 BA, 41 HR, 110 RBI) leads a well-balanced attack, while Johnny Antonelli (21-7, 2.30 ERA) and Ruben Gomez (17-0, 2.88 ERA) pace a staff that leads the NL in ERA. 

 

 

 

 

 

1927 NEW YORK YANKEES: The '27 Yankees are widely regarded as the best team in baseball history. With their heralded "Murderers Row" led by Babe Ruth (.356 BA, 60 HR, 164 RBI) and Lou Gehrig (.373 BA, 47 HR, 175 RBI) the Bronx Bombers feature one of the most fearsome lineups in baseball history. The pitching rotation is not too shabby either, with future Hall of Famers Waite Hoyt (22-7, 2.63 ERA) and Herb Pennock (19-8, 3.00 ERA) heading the staff. The Yankees finishes the season with a record of 110-44 and a 4-0 sweep the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. 

 

 

 

 

1989 OAKLAND ATHLETICS: Oakland (99-63) goes 8-1 in the postseason and sweeps San Francisco in the World Series out-scoring them 32-14. A formidable pitching rotation featuring Dave Stewart (21-9, 3.32 ERA), Bob Welch (17-8, 3.00 ERA) Mike Moore (19-11, 2.61 ERA) and closer Dennis Eckersley (33 SV, 1.88 ERA) is the strength of the team. Mark McGwire (33 HR, 95 RBI), Jose Canseco (17 HR, 57 RBI) and Dave Parker (22 HR, 97 RBI) provide the fireworks. And Rickey Henderson, acquired in a trade with the Yankees, steals 52 bases in just 85 games. 

 

 

 

 

 

2008 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES: The Phillies go 11-3 in the postseason and defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in the World Series. The offense is excellent from to to bottom, with Ryan Howard (.251 BA, 48 HR, 146 RBI), Chase Utley (.280 BA, 33 HR, 104 RBI) and Pat Burrell (.250 BA, 33 HR, 86 RBI) all having big seasons. On the mound, Cole Hamels (14-10, 3.09 ERA) takes his game to another level in the playoffs, going 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five starts and wins NLCS and World Series MVP honors. Brad Lidge (41 SV, 1.95 ERA) is lights out in the 9th inning. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1979 PITTSBURGH PIRATES: Down 3 games to 1 against Baltimore in the World Series, the Buccos fight and claw their way back, winning three straight to claim their fifth title for the City of Champions. The lineup is fierce from top to bottom with Dave Parker (.310 BA, 25 HR, 94 RBI) and Willie Stargell (.281 BA, 32 HR, 82 RBI) leading the way, while Bert Blyleven (12-5, 3.60 ERA), John Candelaria (14-9, 3.22 ERA) and Bruce Kison (13-7, 3.19) head up a steady rotation. 

 

 

 

 

 

1942 ST. LOUIS CARDINALS: After narrowly edging out Brooklyn for the NL pennant by just two games, the '42 Cards (106-48) win their first of three World Series titles in five years by topping the Yankees 4-1. A 21-year old Stan Musial (.315 BA, 10 HR, 72 RBI) and fellow Hall of Famer Enos Slaughter (.318 BA, 13 HR, 98 RBI) provide solid numbers in the middle of the lineup. However, NL MVP Mort Cooper (22-7, 1.78 ERA) and Johnny Beazley (21-6, 2.13 ERA) are the real story, leading the team to an incredible, NL best 2.55 ERA.
