It is the seventh season of the ABA. League MVP Julius "Dr. J" Erving leads the New York Nets (55-29) to their first ABA title with a 4-1 finals series victory over the Utah Stars (51-33). Erving also leads the league in scoring with 27.4 ppg. Al Smith of the Denver Rockets (37-47) tops all passers with 8.1 assists per game, while paint bast Artis Gilmore of the Kentucky Colonels  leads the association with a whopping 18.1 rebounds per game. Center Swen Nater (14.1 p /12.6 r /1.6 a) of the San Antonio Spurs (45-39) wins rookie of the year honors. Other stars of the ABA include: George McGinnis (Indiana Pacers), Louie Dampier (Kentucky Colonels), Willie Wise (Utah Stars), George Gervin (San Antonio Spurs), Dan Issel (Kentucky Colonels), Mel Daniels (Indiana Pacers) and more.
