THE 1977 SEASON:
1977 marks the NFL's last 14 game season as the league will expand to 16 games the following year. The Dallas Cowboy's "Doomsday Defense" (12-2) trumps Denver's (12-2) "Orange Crush" 27-10 in Super Bowl XII to claim their second Lombardi trophy. The Cowboys offense isn't too shabby either featuring NFL rookie of the year, Tony Dorsett (1007 rushing yds), receiving yardage leader Drew Pearson (870 yds) and of course, "Captain America" himself, Roger Staubach. "Sweetness" Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears leads the league in rushing with 1852 yards and is named the NFL's Most Valuable Player. Buffalo's Joe Ferguson tops all QB's with 2803 yards passing. Dallas' DE Harvey Martin is virtually unblockable and earns Defensive Player of the year honors.
The other playoff teams:
AFC
Raiders (11-3) Super Bowl repeat falls short, but what a complete team! Colts (10-4) Lydell Mitchell rushes for 1159 yds and catches 71 passes!; Steelers (9-5) Too many turnovers in 77', but the Steel Curtain remains a force.
On the outside looking in: Dolphins (10-4) Would've been a tough out. Miami makes a case for playoff expansion.
NFC
Rams (10-4) 10 pro bowlers on this squad including cerebral quarterback Pat Haden; Vikings (9-5) The Purple People Eaters grind their way to another NFC championship appearance. Tarkenton at age 37 is still hard to defend. Bears (9-5) MVP Walter Payton carries his team into the playoffs.
