THE 1966 SEASON:
Baltimore wins it's first World Series title with a 4 game sweep of the L.A. Dodgers. Oriole's MVP Frank Robinson (.316-49-116) is a triple crown winner in the AL and his 49 homers top the entire MLB. Teammate Boog Powell finishes third in the AL with 34 dingers of his own. In the NL, Dodger's Sandy Koufax wins the triple crown for pitching. Koufax's 27 wins, 1.73 ERA and 317 strike outs, all MLB bests, earn him his third Cy Young Award.
The NL East features a competitive pennant race with only 3 games separating L.A. (95-67), San Francisco (93-68) and Pittsburgh (92-70). Philadelphia (87-75), Atlanta (85-77) and St. Louis (83-79) finish 8,9 and 10 games back respectively. Baltimore (97-63) wins the AL by 9 games, but Minnesota (89-73), Detroit (88-74) and Chicago (83-79) all have solid seasons.
Pittsburgh's Roberto Clemente (.317-29-119) wins the NL MVP, while teammate Matty Alou's .342 BA leads the entire MLB. Hammerin' Hank Aaron of the new Atlanta Braves leads the NL with 44 homers and 127 RBI's. Minnesota's Jim Kaat leads all AL pitchers with 25 wins, while Gary Peters of the White Sox tops the AL with his 1.98 ERA. Cleveland ace Sam McDowell leads the AL in strike outs with 225, while star reliever Jack Aker of Kansas City is tops in the MLB with 32 saves. Lou Brock of St. Louis leads the MLB with 74 stolen bases.
